With over 80 student volunteers and community members, Enactus Saint Mary’s won first place at the Enactus National Exposition for their solutions addressing food insecurity and food waste. Highlighting their two unique business ideas, Square Roots and Plastarch, Enactus Saint Mary’s aims to take first in the global competition in October.

Square Roots:

Founded in 2016, Square Roots, a registered Community Interest Corporation purchases perfectly healthy but cosmetically imperfect produce from local farms and sells it for a 56% discount at community locations across Canada.

Plastarch Packaging is a fully compostable, bioplastic alternative for the restaurant industry, created from a starch base. Currently, Enactus Saint Mary’s is developing the products and testing them for quality and durability in the Saint Mary’s University chemistry department. Plastarch products look and feel just like regular single use plastics, they are firm with some flexibility, and don’t get soggy like a paper straw.

The fun part – The main ingredient in Plastarch products is potato starch.

Enactus is the largest student leadership organization in the world and strives to solve environmental, social and economic issues through entrepreneurial action. Enactus chapters (universities and colleges) from around the world work to solve global issues and showcase their successes through regional, national and worldwide competitions.
